Speed FIV

Feline Immunodeficiency Test

Why perform the Speed® FIV?

After carrying the virus asymptomatically for several months to years, FIV infection in the cat is seen clinically by the onset of an immunodeficiency syndrome, which is often difficult to differentiate from infection with FeLV or feline coronavirus. Detection of specific antibodies directed against FIV makes it possible to determine the precise immunestatus of the animal. The mean seroprevalence is 4 to 66% (2), but may reach 40% in certain populations of at-risk cats (stray cats, un-castrated tomcats). In the absence of a vaccine, regular screening of cats infected with FIV is considered as the best means of fighting the virus (3).

When should you perform the Speed® FIV?

Speed® FIV test can be used to monitor the FIV status of an animal from adoption and at any age thereafter. He can be proposed at the annual visit or before elective surgery, and more commonly in cats that are exposed to the virus (stray cats, cats that regularly get into fights, etc.). In catteries, Speed® FIV test can be used to determine the status of new arrivals such that effective preventive measures can be implemented to protect healthy resident cats. Following possible exposure, Speed® FIV test can be used to detect seroconversion by performing 2 tests, 60 days apart.

  • Speed® FIV has demonstrated his superiority as being the most sensitive test for the diagnosis of FIV(1).
  • Quick and easy, Speed® FeLV can be performed in-practice, in one step and in only 15 minutes.
